Building History

The Cushing House
Constructed in 1872 by Albert and Martha Cushing, the home is possibly South Bend's best example of Second Empire architecture. With the classic mansard roof and well preserved brick, stone, and windows, the outside of the home is greatly unchanged. The large front doors won a 1st Prize Medal for Design at Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1893 and will be restored to their former glory. The mansion boasts over 7000 square feet of room and has original hardwood flooring throughout most of the first and second floors. Gorgeous butternut wood work, including two very large pocket doors adorn the home. The house has twice been used as a bed & breakfast, once under the name The Book Inn and most recently as the Cushing Manor Inn and Tea Room. Safe and Amanda are honored to be the next stewards of this historic home and continue the legacy of hospitality that are in its foundation.
